What To Post On Instagram (For More Followers, Engagement & Traffic!)

Look, we’ve all been there.

You got your coffee, you got your laptop, your hands are on your keyboard and… nothing.

You can’t figure out what to post on Instagram.

Let alone, how you will complete content for the entire month.

Luckily for you, here at LYFE Marketing, we create over 600 posts a week for our small business clients.

You heard that right – over 600 posts a week, and have a pretty simple formula to create great content consistently.

And we’re revealing that formula in this post.

Ready? Let’s dive in!

What to Post on Instagram: Steps to Help You Come Up With Content

When people think about what to post on Instagram, they naturally start with the what – as in what type of content.

Things like quote posts, behind-the-scenes posts, etc.

Everyone does it when talking about content for their marketing with Instagram. But, it’s unfortunately the wrong place to start.

Which brings me to step number one of what to post on Instagram

Step 1: Establish Your Topics

infographicThis means establish what topics you should create content around that your audience will actually care about.

Here’s the thing, we can tell you exactly what type of content to post.

Literally, right now, we can give you 50 different posts to create and you can find 100 articles that tell you the same thing.

But, if your audience does not find value in what you post or if they are not interested in what you post, they won’t engage with it.

You might even start losing Instagram followers if you don’t give much attention to what you post.

And at that point you’d likely ask yourself why you even posted in the first place.

So, how do you figure out what topics your audience will care about?

You do that by using the G&P Method. The G stands for Goals and the P stands for Pain points.

A goal is something that your audience wants to accomplish.

A pain point is the troubling issues or challenges that motivate your audience to seek a solution.

A bonus tip is to include emotional states in your list of goals and pain points.

If you take the time to do this, goals and pain points will be the cornerstone for all the content you create.

In fact, if you want to create content like Jamal Murray makes 3-pointers, here’s what we want you to do:

  1. Open up a document or spreadsheet
  2. Make one column for audience goals
  3. Make another column for audience pain points
  4. Then list out as many goals and pain points as possible for your target audience. Really think about the things that motivate your audience and the things that keep them up at night.

As mentioned before, this list will serve as the every flowing library of topics from which you can pull ideas for Instagram and subsequently create content from.

Step 2: Create Posts Around Your Topics

Now that you have the hardest and most important part out of the way, knowing what you will talk about, it is not time to create your posts.

This is the fun part as you simply have to choose a topic and choose a content type.

Here are a few content types that never stop working:

Now, you might be thinking, is that it? Really, four content types – four?

Well, hear us out.

Let’s say you listed out 10 goals and 10 pain points for your audience.

That would equate to at least 80 posts you could create from just that list alone. That’s with no creativity at all and no expansion on your list.

So the key is to put time into your list of goals and pain points and you will never run out of posts to create.

If you still don’t believe us, we want you to take a look at the posts you like everyday on Instagram, outside of selfies.

We’re willing to bet they likely fall into one of the four content types we just provided.

Step 3: Post What Works

We hear it all the time: “How do I get more engagement on my posts.”

Our answer: Post more content like your top performing posts.

Very simple answer but it’s true.

If you want to increase social media engagement through your posts, this is what you should do.

Go back through your posts, analyze your top performing posts, and pull out the factors that led to the success.

It could be the goal or pain point.

It could be the content type. It could be the color theory or font choice.

The key is to continually analyze what is working and do more of it.

Just think, WWCD – what would chick-fil-a do? They would sell more chicken.

So find out what your “chicken” is and continue to give that to your Instagram audience.
